alcopop "energy drinks": a new threat on the market

alcoholic beverages carrying the label of "energy drink" are prompting alarm amongst 16 us attorneys general participating in the national association of attorneys general youth access to alcohol committee. some of these so called "energy drinks", such as those distributed under the brand names , "sparks" and "sparks plus", contain over 200mg of caffeine, or 7 times as much caffeine as might be found in the average cup of green tea. in a news release, maine's attorney general, steve rowe, sums up the concerns of many over these high-caffeine cocktails: “i am gravely concerned about the negative health outcomes that may result from consumers unknowingly mixing dangerously high amounts of caffeine with higher than disclosed amounts of alcohol. caffeine is a stimulant that can mask feelings of intoxication, giving drinkers the false impression that they can drink more and function normally. this is a recipe for disaster.”
