BreakAway Program
School communities across the nation are becoming increasingly interested in how to reduce and prevent the problems listed above and other matters of concern that are barriers to learning. Often the efforts to deal with these problems have been undertaken in a fragmented manner as if they were isolated phenomena and as if preventing them required vastly different approaches. Few schools have developed an awareness that there is a “technology of prevention” that can give guidance to their efforts and which deserves an important place in the educational enterprise.
BreakAway is such a technology and it can be easily taught to school staff and community organizations interested in making their schools and communities a more positive place, freer of these perplexing problems.
The BreakAway program offers training in the following areas:
- Goallessness
- Truancy
- Tardiness
- Disruptive Behavior
- School Failure & Drop Out
- Family Problems
- Underage Drinking
- Drug Use
- Bullying
- Tagging & Vandalism
- Suicide
BreakAway equips people in a variety of ways to analyze the conditions surrounding the above mentioned symptoms, identify the most important factors which contribute to these symptoms, engage those parts of the school and community that can contribute to a solution, and shape and carry out action plans designed to result in significant change that reduces these barriers to learning and school success.
Our experience in offering training has led us to shape three kinds of events that can be tailored to the needs of your school. First, there is the BreakAway Orientation Training, one day in length, which provide an overview of the BreakAway framework. This one-day session provides school staff with the information they need to determine whether or not they are interested in committing themselves to a BreakAway Program.
Second, there is the three-day BreakAway Skill Building Training which consists of the concepts, strategies, tools, and skills needed to implement a BreakAway Program at your school or district.
The third type of training is a BreakAway Training-of-Trainers, a five-day experience which will prepare school staff to train others in the BreakAway Program. This can help to build a strong technical assistance resource group in a school district that can provide sustained leadership.
