A Permanent Fix to a Temporary Problem

In 2002, there were 31,655 suicides in the United States (87 suicides per day; 1 suicide every 17 minutes), with 11 out of every 100,00 Americans killing themselves during that year. Also in 2002, 132,353 individuals were hospitalized following suicide attempts; of those 116, 639 were treated in emergency departments and subsequently released (CDC, 2004).

How You Can Help

Fortunately, suicide is preventable, and there are steps that you can take to help a friend, family member, student or peer who might be at risk for suicide. Please explore the Suicide Is Preventable homepage to learn more.
